GrabTaxi launches luxury car service in Singapore, charges flat fee

GrabTaxi, a popular taxi booking mobile app in Southeast Asia, has launched GrabCar, a luxury car service not unlike Uber.

The complement, which allows customers to use the existing GrabTaxi app to hire a premium car with its own private driver instead of a regular taxi, is now available in Singapore.

Like Uber, GrabCar is catered to customers who want a fancier commute, and also aims to provide a viable alternative for those who need to get around during peak hours.

The most recognisable difference between GrabCar and Uber is that the former charges the customer a flat fee. A ride on a typical four-seater car (say, a Volkswagen Passat) will set you back $50 no matter how far or long your trip is. Any ride less than four kilometres in distance costs $38. There’s a late-night surcharge: $10 from midnight to 6am.
