Cabbies may have the National Taxi Association speaking up in defence of their ageing industry, but now private hire drivers under Uber and Grab have a guild too in the form of National Private Hire Vehicles Association.
The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) announced today about the newly-formed association, which will protect the rights of private hire drivers under third-party ride-hailing apps and other chauffeuring services. There’s an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 full-time private hire drivers currently, and the figures keep increasing with the entry of Uber and Grab in Singapore.
Key concerns include the safeguarding of their livelihoods, workplace protection, welfare and more that’ll ensure fair treatment of those under the profession.
