Government e-services will be disrupted this weekend for SingPass upgrade

Don’t panic if you can’t get in.

All government e-services will be unavailable this Sat 10pm up to Sun 10am because of a system upgrade to accommodate an enhanced SingPass (that’s short for Singapore Personal Access, in case you didn’t know) log-in system which will be requiring a two-step verification process.

The additional second step requires users to enter a one-time password that’s delivered either via a token or SMS. In addition, users can opt to customise their username — the default is one’s NRIC number.

Why the changes?

There have been security breaches recently. A total of 1,560 accounts were hacked a year ago, according to the Infocomm Development Authority.

“The breach was detected when 11 SingPass users enquired about letters they’d received informing them they’d requested for a password reset, though they hadn’t,” Coconuts Singapore reported last year.
