The Public Transport Council (PTC) threw us a big bone and decided to grant fare reductions this December — even more so than the reductions they gave us last year.
A 4.2 percent fare reduction will be implemented on Dec 30, meaning we’ll be saving 1 to 27 cents in card fares. Senior citizens’ concessionary card fares will be reduced by 1 to 7 cents while student concessionary card fares will be reduced by… 1 cent only.
The PTC added that they’ll be simplifying the current fare structure as well by lowering the fares of full-underground rail lines (like the North East, Circle and Downtown Lines) to the fare level of their above-ground public transport cousins (North-South and East-West Lines, LRT and buses). The PTC wants to do away with the difference in fares and move to a single fare structure.
Next year, there’ll be a further 1.5 percent reduction of fares in the next PTC Fare Review Exercise — a decision made to “spread out the impact of volatile energy prices over time”.
