One man, after discovering S$1,190 (US$876) in cash at a POSB automated teller machine in Woodlands town centre, decided to do the right thing and not keep the money for himself. Instead, Laudi Heryasin went on Facebook to post an appeal for information, along with a photo of the cash and a receipt.

He explained that the individual in front of him was rushing off from the POSB ATM machine and forgot to pocket his cash. But before the 33-year-old realized what just happened, the person had already gone off.

So Heryasin took the notes and the receipt, waited about 10 to 15 minutes in hopes that the man would return, and then phoned the POSB call centre to report the incident. The next day, he returned everything to POSB’s Marsiling branch, reported Channel NewsAsia.

Heryasin, an infocommunications specialist at the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, revealed that the bank subsequently called to update him when the money had been credited back to the owner’s account.

“For me this [is not] something special; everyone should have this basic gesture,” he said. “So my job here is done. Glad I can help other people.”

In response, a DBS spokesperson commended Heryasin for returning the money to its branch. He added that anyone else who comes across a situation like this should note that cash left at ATMs is retracted within a certain period of time, and the amount is then refunded to the customer’s account. The bank also has a refund process for uncollected cash that is returned to its branches.
