The 65-year-old driver of the gold Mercedes-Benz which breached security at the Woodlands Checkpoint has been charged with commiting a rash act and vandalism.
If found guilty, Malaysian Tan Chu Seng faces a fine of up to $5,000 or a year in jail, or both, for rashly causing hurt and injury to an auxillary police officer when he drove his car through the barrier of Arrival Car Green Channel at Woodlands Checkpoint on March 8.
For damaging the Cat-Claw security barrier, which is considered government property, when he drove onto it, Tan faces a fine of up to $2,000 or three years in jail if convicted.
The incident — the second in less than three months after a Malaysian teacher evaded immigration clearance at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Jan. 17 — has raised serious concerns over the effectiveness of Singapore’s security systems in place at the immigration checkpoints.
Tan will be remanded for a week before his next court date on March 17.
