This year’s Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) is held in Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore — traditional heavyweights — is expected to rake in ‘dem bling-bling as Team Singapore sent its largest away contingent in the Games and ASEAN Para Games.
Singapore has so far won 50 gold medals, 19 in swimming, 5 in table tennis, 3 each in synchronised swimming and billiards, 2 each in athletics, shooting, fencing, wushu, bowling, squash and sailing and 1 each in golf , waterski, ice-skating, water polo and track cycling.

Swimming: 14 golds
As the swim events concluded, Singapore brought home 19 gold medals, six silver and 10 bronze — their highest ever away medal haul.
Day 1 saw 3 gold medals and 2 Games record set by Joseph Schooling and the women’s 100m freestyle relay team. Day 2 saw another 3 as Quah Zheng Wen recovered from his 50m backstroke crown by winning the 200m butterfly gold, and then teamed up with Schooling, Danny Yeo and Darren Lim to cruise to gold and a Games and national record in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay. Roanne Ho successfully defended her women’s 50m breaststroke, overwriting her previous national record at 31.29sec. The Quah siblings continued their dominance on Day 3, with Quah Ting Wen bagging 3 golds in the women’s 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly and later teaming up with sister Quah Jing Wen, Christy Chue and Rachel Tseng to set a new Games record in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay. Joseph Schooling won his pet event in the 100m butterfly comfortably and Quah Zheng Wen took another gold at the 200m backstroke to round up 5 swimming gold medals for the day.
The men’s swim contingent then won another 3 gold medals on Day 4, with Quah Zheng Wen winning the 100m backstroke, Joseph Schooling winning the 100m freestyle and the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team taking the total gold medal haul to 14. In Day 5, the gold rush continued as Teong Tzen Wei took gold in the men’s 50m freestyle which previous champ Joseph Schooling pulled out from. The women’s team continued their dominance in the pool as they easily won the 4×100 medley relay final.
On the final Day 6, Amanda Lim set a Games record on her way to the 50m freestyle gold while Quah Jing Wen wrapped up her gold medal haul of 5 with a stunning win at the women’s 100m butterfly final under the 1 minute mark. The men’s 4x100m medley relay team assured Singapore would finish with 19 golds as they won the medley relay final setting a Games record of 3:37:46.

Wushu: 2 Golds
Jowen Lim topped the optional daoshu and gunshu event, having come from winning the gold in 2015. The 18-year-old clinched top spot once again for his second gold in the competition with a score of 9.68 in the men’s optional changquan.
Water Polo: 1 gold
The water polo team defended their title once again as they reigned over Malaysia 17-4 in a one-sided affair.
Fencing: 2 golds
Amita Berthier, 16, beat Samantha Catantan of the Philippines 15-7 to nab her first-ever gold in the women’s individual foil. Sportsgirl of the year Lau Ywen also struck gold in the women’s individual sabre.

Bowling: 2 golds
Cherie Tan dominated the women’s singles with a total of 1,413 pinfalls ahead of Malaysian pair Sin Li Jane (1,300) and Shalin Zulkifli (1,297). The men’s bowling team won it’s first gold in 22 years, scoring 6,399 pinfalls to beat Indonesia (6,280) and Thailand (6,278).

Athletics: 2 golds
Soh Rui Yong defended his marathon title, just like how he likes to defend his sponsorships.
The 25-year-old clocked a personal best of 2hr 24min 55s. Michelle Sng bagged the first high jump gold in 52 years, but not without drama as she was forced into a jump-off after agreeing to joint-gold with Vietnam’s Duong Thi Viet Anh when both failed to clear 1.86m, but successfully appealed to share the gold.

High Jump
Table Tennis: 5 golds
An all-Singapore final saw Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu beat compatriots Zhou Yihan and Li Ye 11-8, 11-9, 11,13, 8-11, 11-6 in the women’s doubles. The men’s doubles also featured an all-Singapore final as Gao Ning and Pang Xue Jie beat Clarence Chew and Ethan Poh 11-4, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6. The Women’s Singles Final saw Singaporeans face off once again, but it was Feng Tianwei who took down Zhou Yihan for the gold. Gao Ning edged Clarence Chew in the men’s singles final. The women’s team then duly asserted their dominance by winning Thailand 3-0 to finish this year’s Games with 5 golds.

Sailing: 2 golds
Ryan Loh, Bernie Chin and Mark Wong won Singapore’s first sailing gold in the men’s dinghy laser at the National Sailing Centre in Langkawi. Elisa Yukie Yokoyama and Cheryl Teo finished with a gold in the women’s 470 class event.
Billiards: 3 golds
Chan Kent Kwang and Tey Chun Kiat bagged gold in the men’s snooker doubles (scotch), the republic’s first. In the 9-ball pool doubles event, Aloysius Yapp and Toh Lian Han beat Myanmar’s Maung Maung and V Munn Hein Kyaw 9-3 to claim the republic’s first gold medal in pool in 12 years. Peter Gilchrist won his 5th straight English Billiards gold since 2009 with a 3-0 victory over Myanmar’s Chi Ko Ko.
Squash: 2 golds
It was all smiles for the squash contingent as both men’s and women’s doubles team clinched gold. Mao Shi Hui and Sherilyn Yang beat Jemyca Aribado and Yvonne Alyssa Dalida of the Philippines 11-5, 11-8 in the women’s doubles while Vivian Rhamanan and Samuel Kang trounced Indonesian pair Ade Furkon and Agung Wilant 11-3, 11-3.

Shooting: 2 golds
17-year-old Martina Veloso pipped flag bearer and compatriot Jasmine Ser to the 10m air rifle crown in a 1-2 finish for Singapore shooters. Ser then redeemed herself to snag the gold in the 50m 3 positions final and setting a Games record for points scored at 451.2 points.

Sasha Christian defends her SEA Games gold for the third straight time with an impressive score of 62.78 points, 15.11 more than Indonesia’s Galuh Mutiara Maulinda who settled for silver.
Golf: 1 gold
The men’s team won its first-ever gold by beating arch-nemesis Thailand. It is Singapore’s 43rd gold medal of the games.
Ice-skating: 1 gold
Yu Shuran strikes gold in the women’s free skating as Singapore secure a 1-2 finish with Chloe Ing finishing second.

Track Cycling: 1 gold
27-year-old Calvin Sim became Singapore’s first track cycling champ in 20 years, surging ahead of 11 other competitors over 100 laps around the National Velodrome.
