It could have been just another random Saturday where a video goes viral, we complain over it and move on.
However, that is not the case for Go-Jek driver Aaron Heng, who has now become an overnight sensation for his epic rant.
In case you missed it, we profiled his epic rant on Saturday where he lashed out against an elderly couple who were his customers – all because of a $7 price difference.
After facing the wrath of Singaporeans who chided him online for resorting to childish measures such as scolding the couple and filming the scene, Mr Heng has come out of the woodwork to apologize for the incident.
His original post was taken down from his Facebook page but was later re-uploaded on Saturday by Facebook page SG Road Vigilante, who also reposted a police report that he allegedly made about the video.
In the report, he said he actually sent the video to a WhatsApp chat group with his friends and he did not share the video anywhere else.
It does seem odd though that the video made its way from a WhatsApp chat group to an open social media platform, but we’ll let you be the judge of that.
“I hope the police will look into the matter and advise me what to do,” he said in the report.
He apologised on his Facebook page for being “unnecessarily rude” and “not respectful” in the video.
“Time is precious to us as a private hire driver,” he said. “I pray for a chance to make good.”
According to Mr Heng, he had picked up the elderly couple from a country club and was confirming the price reflected on his app with the couple’s app when he spotted the price difference.
He claimed the elderly couple refused to show him their app to prove the price discrepancy and asked him to alight immediately to drop them off.
After arguing that it was unsafe to do so, the driver reached a compromise and stopped by a small road so the couple can make a call to Go-Jek.
Mr Heng said he ended up behaving the way he did in the video because he believed he was being accused of overcharging the passenger.
“I am just trying to hit my incentives as the fares are already low,” he explained. “The pressure is immense. The terms are challenging. I’m facing a lot of stress to meet the targets.”
A Go-Jek spokesperson confirmed to Coconuts Singapore that the company has since taken action to resolve the incident with both parties and would not be commenting further on the case.
Meanwhile, memes have begun to stream in from the Internet about the incident. This one, in particular, combined the driver with another person who is now a national sensation for assuming a Go-Jek driver wanted to kidnap her:
Singapore, you’re always full of surprises.
