Founder and president of Transitioning.org Gilbert Goh has called Singaporeans to participate in a boycott against SMRT, to protest the imminent fare transport hike.
In a statement on his Facebook page, Goh said that he knows it is not easy for Singaporeans to take up the boycott as there are no feasible alternative modes of transport. However, with planning and determination, he believes that the system can be changed.
“Unity is strength and we need to send a clear signal to the authorities that we don’t take things lying down anymore from now on,” he said.
The post has garnered animated feedback (some hilarious), with one user commenting, “You want me to walk from home to work from Bedok South to Chinatown?”
Others think it’s a fruitless attempt as SMRT trains are the key mode of transport for many Singaporeans.
Earlier this year, Goh also organised the final Population White Paper protest — see our photo gallery of the event.
