The thousands of Singaporeans with accounts at two of the city-state’s largest banks can look forward to 40 pop-up ATMs spitting out new or good-as-new notes ahead of Chinese New Year.
Because the festive occasion’s money-gifting tradition will drive up demand for fresh notes, DBS and POSB banks are fielding the temporary ATMs tomorrow through Chinese New Year Eve at community centers in 20 neighborhoods.
Ang bao, or red envelope, refers to the gifting of money in a red packet and is considered a symbol of luck, life and happiness. They’re normally handed out by married couples to parents, singles and children.
The machines will disburse S$100, S$300 and S$500 in denominations of S$2, S$10 and S$50 respectively, as well as S$600 in S$10 and S$50 notes.
Last year, 200,000 people made use of them ahead of Chinese New Year, POSB said today in a statement.
All machines will operate 24 hours except for the ones located in the Chong Pang and Teck Ghee community centers. Those will be usable 9am to 9:30pm.
Advanced online reservations for the notes also available via the website.
