GE2015: Landslide win for PAP as opposition loses seats in Parliament

So it’s finally over. After a very short but nonetheless compelling campaigning period, Polling Day came and went with many expecting opposition parties to make significant dents in the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) governance. After all, the 2015 General Election was the first time since independence that all seats in Parliament were being contested.

Alas, the results were announced just a couple of hours after voting stations were closed, and it soon became clear that the PAP were the ones having a great time at the polls. All thoughts of an upset in the political landscape were quashed when the results progressively revealed that PAP were performing a lot better than they did in the last General Election, even reclaiming back Punggol East, a district that held by bitter rivals Workers’ Party.

Dramatic turn of events were far and few in between — Potong Pasir residents seem to be favour PAP administration once again over the Singapore People’s Party’s Lina Chiam, the wife of opposition veteran and district icon Chiam See Tong. Then there was also Reform Party’s Kenneth Jeyaratnam who just lost all his optimism in Singapore’s politics when he saw how badly his party lost, to the point where he simply went on a bitter rant during an interview on TV. Then of course there was the issue of Aljunied, whose battleground was fought over by PAP and WP — a recounting of votes was demanded because the margin was just so, so narrow. In any case, here are the results of the 2015 General Election. Check out the people who promise to serve and represent you in Parliament for the next couple of years.
