Gas leak at Tanjong Pagar MRT station; passengers forced to get off train to escape ‘smoke’

‘Smoke’ filled up the MRT station at Tanjong Pagar this afternoon — at 2.53pm, freon gas leaked from the train’s air-conditioning system, and confused commuters began dashing out. Fortunately, the passenger platform remained in service, and no train services were affected, neither was anyone reported injured.

Commuters described SMRT staff as efficient in leading them to safety, although no one was really running in an outrightly panicked manner. They stayed in the station, and when the next train pulled in around five to seven minutes later, they got on and continued to their destination.

The faulty train has since been towed to Ulu Pandan Depot for inspection. The Singapore Civil Defence Force contacted SMRT after video footage of the incident came to its attention, but SMRT said the smoke had dissipated and it did not require SCDF’s assistance.

“As a precautionary measure, SCDF deployed its resources to the train station to investigate on the matter. There is no fire detected and no sign of smoke now at the station. Train service to the station is also not affected,” SCDF announced.

The police, SCDF and SMRT are investigating the matter.
