Free MRT rides for early morning commuters extended until June 2017

Good news for those of you who have been faithfully waking up at unearthly hours every day to save on your daily commute fare. The Free Pre-Peak Travel scheme, which was launched in June 2013 and already extended twice, will continue for yet another year till June 30, 2017.

Commuters who end their train journey before 7.45am on weekdays at 18 MRT stations in the city area — including Raffles Place, City Hall, Tanjong Pagar, Orchard and Bugis — get to ride for free, and those who exit the same stations between 7.45am and 8am get up to 50 cents off their fare.

According to Senior Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo, about 65,000 people have been using the scheme on a daily basis. The Land Transport Authority also reaffirmed the programme, stating that since its introduction there’s been a steady decrease of seven to eight percent in commuters during the morning peak period.

This initiative is part of the overall Travel Smart Network, which offers government funding to organisations that urge employees to travel during off-peak hours and utilise other forms of transport like walking and cycling to get to work.
