Free screenings of local films from the ’50s to ’70s at Capitol Theatre this month

In celebration of SG50, Singaporeans will be able to catch free screenings of five early local films at the Capitol Theatre.

This is part of the Spotlight on Singapore Cinema initiative, a collaboration between the Media Development Authority (MDA), the National Library Board, National Archives of Singapore, Asian Film Archive (AFA), and the National Museum of Singapore Cinematheque, Channel NewsAsia reports.

The films that will be screened are 1963’s Chuchu Datok Merah (Datok Merah’s Grandson), The Lion City (1960), the 1952’s P Ramlee drama Patah Hati (Broken Hearted), Hokkien opera film Taming of the Princess (1958) and 1979’s Tamil romantic drama Ninaithale Inikkum (Sweet Memories).

The Spotlight on Singapore Cinema will kick off with a special opening screening of Chuchu Datok Merah, and it runs from Aug 20-23.

Tickets to the films can be purchased on SISTIC.
