Chaos erupted along Tanjong Pagar Road yesterday evening as a Mercedes car mowed down pedestrians on a curb before crashing into a truck and a taxi.
Yahoo News Singapore reported that four pedestrians were injured in the accident, and the 41-year-old driver behind the wheel of the Mercedes was arrested for suspected drink driving.
Witnesses who spoke to the publication noted that the incident took place a little before 6:30pm, with the car seen zipping down the road at high speed before it rammed into four pedestrians along the road opposite Amara Hotel.
“The first two people went flying. He mowed them down and there were sparks; then he crashed,” stated one eyewitness.
After ramming into people on the curb, the car crossed over to the other side of the road and crashed into a truck, before ricocheting into a taxi, according to another eyewitness, who was nearly knocked down herself while crossing the road near Tanjong Pagar Plaza.
The aftermath was horrific — one female and three male casualties lay on the ground, including an elderly man who was said to be bleeding heavily. A video clip captured the Mercedes driver in a daze while medics attended to the injured pedestrians.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force dispatched four ambulances to the scene, with the four casualties conveyed to Singapore General Hospital. Investigations are ongoing.
