Four films carrying Singapore’s flag at this year’s Cannes Festival

Not one but four titles represent Singapore at the Cannes Film Festival 2014, this is a nice follow-up to filmmaker Anthony Chen bagging the Camera d’Or Award for his heartfelt drama Ilo Ilo last year.

First we have 22-year-old Ngee Ann Polytechnic student Han Fengyu’s Last Trip Home, a film that centres on the unbreakable bond between a father and his son as they struggle home to China from Singapore with their only possession — a car.

The second, directed by Atsuko Hirayanagi who is currently enrolled in the NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia here in Singapore, tells the story of an off-kilter 55-year-old office lady in the mood for a new identity. Shot in Singapore and Japan, Oh Lucy!, brings to mind films like The Crying Game and Mulholland Dr..

Both will compete against 14 other films submitted by schools from around the world.

On the hunt for potential producers and distributors, established Singaporean director K. Rajagopal’s screenplay titled A Yellow Bird, about an ex-convict trying to reconnect with his past, is the only film from Asia picked for The Atelier — a Cannes platform for the promotion of new work.

And finally, there’s director Allysa Sing’s short film On An Infinite Loop which is also making its rounds on the festival circuit.
