Former Filipino nurse convicted under Sedition Act for making offensive comments online and lodging false reports

The Tan Tock Seng Hospital nurse who made derogatory and offensive comments against Singapore more than once on social media in 2014 — and at first claimed his account had been hacked — pleaded guilty to three charges in court today.

Ello Ed Mundsel Bello, 28, called Singaporeans “loosers” and “Stinkaporeans”, and said that he will pray for disasters to strike the country so that Singaporeans will die. 

Today the Philippine national “was convicted on one count under the Sedition Act, for promoting feelings of ill-will and hostility, and on two counts of providing false information to police. An additional charge under the Sedition Act, and another for lying to police, will be taken into consideration during sentencing,” reports Channel NewsAsia.

Bellow will be sentenced on Sep 16.

He could face a fine of up to $5,000 or a jail term of up to three years, or both, under the anti-sedition act. For giving false information to the police, he can face a jail term of up to one year, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
