Ever wondered why Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) ain’t that great as you thought it’d be? Maybe it’s because a director was involved in a case of corruption, where he accepted copious amounts of cash in return for pushing forward businesses from certain contracting companies.
36-year-old Soh Yew Meng now faces up to five years in prison and $100,000 fine for each of his four counts of corruption and three attempts to obtain bribes. During the course of running RWS, he received gratifications worth $320,00, TODAY reports.
He even had an accomplice as well to help him in his shady dealings with the contracting companies. 32-year-old freelance quantity surveyor Tan Siow Hui faces six counts of abetment by engaging in a conspiracy with Soh.
On four occasions between July 2013 and January 2014, bribe money exchanged hands at various locations (including car parks and canteens) from the contracting companies’ directors to the former RWS director. Soh had received them in exchange for “furthering the business interest” between the companies and RWS.
Companies involved in the scandal include Shanghai Chong Kee Furniture & Construction, Maple Lighting Studio and Beyond Builders. Soh even tried to get bribes from Novelty Project Services.
Both Soh and Tan are intending to claim trial — they’re set to appear in court once again on Oct 23.
