A shop that sells food for only $1 each? Sounds too good to be true — but it’s not. The Food Pantry is a shop space at Sims Avenue that will open on Apr 25 to sell consumable items close to their expiry date, but still in good condition. And yes, everything goes for just a dollar.
Established by non-profit organisation The Food Bank Singapore, this thrift store will offer canned foods, biscuits, beverages, sauces and confectionaries that have less than two months of shelf life. Fruits and veggies that are edible but not ‘good-looking’ will soon make an appearance as well. This effort aims to raise awareness on food wastage reduction, and all finances raised will be used for The Food Pantry’s manpower, utilities, rental and other expenses.
Feel free to donate to the cause, too — at the outlet, you can drop off stuff like unopened packaged food a week before they expire. And if you decide to shop at the store, make sure you check the products for signs like bad odour or bulging packaging before consuming them, lest they be spoiled.
The Food Pantry is at 100A Sims Ave from Apr 25. Daily 10am-10pm.
