First female Supreme Court judge retires after 22 years

Singapore’s first female Judicial Commissioner in 1991 and then the first female judge of the Supreme Court in 1994 is retiring — effective today, Oct. 30 — after more than 22 years of service.

Justice Lai Siu Chiu had also been actively involved in social causes, including with the Salvation Army, Singapore After-Care Association, Yellow Ribbon Fund and the Children’s Charities Association, which she continues to support.

Justice Lai revealed in a statement that her time at the Bench had been enjoyable, enriching and immensely satisfying, and she hopes to continue to contribute to the law system in some way even after her retirement.
