First-ever MasterChef Asia winner is Singaporean Woo Wai Leong

Singaporean Woo Wai Leong, 27, beat his Malaysian rival and emerged as Asia’s first MasterChef last night.

Woo won US$50,000 in cash and his own cookbook — and, good man, he is donating a part of his prize to a fund for a chef whom he doesn’t even know personally.

“People may not know this, but those in the food and beverage industry are tight. We would help each other whenever we can,” the experienced bartender told The New Paper.

The chef of Strangers’ Reunion café, Sebastian Tan, was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, and inspired a trending Twitter hashtag #saveastranger linked to a fundraising effort for him.

The first MasterChef Asia season started with 15 home cooks from China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.

“Woo’s winning dish was a dessert in celebration of SG50. His sorbet resembled a junk boat, featuring financiers, a type of sponge cake, and meringue shards as the sails of the boat. It was also infused with flavours of the Singapore Sling,” reports Channel NewsAsia.
