The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be exhuming 3,400 graves at Bukit Brown cemetery in the months ahead with the first batch already publicly exhumed on Dec. 17.
Family members are allowed to keep the burial items or pass them on to the National Heritage Board (NHB) for preservation, although the NHB cannot guarantee full preservation of all.
90,000 tombstones, however, will be left untouched, reportedly so the cemetery can continue to play its role as a heritage site.
The World Monuments Fund has already included Bukit Brown cemetery on its 2014 Watch list, much to the delight of activists, who have been fighting to preserve the site for its deep connections to Singapore history and culture.
