The River Hongbao festival is in its 31st edition, and for the Year of the Rooster, it’s attempting to go modern. From the end of January, the floating platform at Marina Bay will be (quite literally) lit.

From the heart-shaped entrance walkway to the main lantern showcase that highlights local landscapes like Jewel Changi Airport and Punggol Eco-town, the fest is set to exude a vibrant atmosphere with its kaleidoscopic colours and larger-than-life installations. Also expect nightly fireworks and laser displays (just in case you missed the NYE pyrotechnics).

And if you’re bringing your elderly relatives to soak up the festivities, don’t forget to help them download the interactive mobile app that can be used to send Chinese New Year wishes. These writings will appear on sky lanterns on your phone screens, and when you put on the virtual reality glasses provided, you’ll get a 360-degree view of the flying lanterns. #sofuturistic

Adding to the experience are local artists such as Nathan Hartono, Roy Loi and Hong Shao Xuan performing in nightly entertainment shows, as well as amusement rides, carnival games and an outdoor food street serving up local and regional delicacies.
River Hongbao 2017 is on Jan 26-Feb 4, daily 2pm-11pm (extended until 1am on Jan 27) at The Float @ Marina Bay, 20 Raffles Ave. Free.
