A third-floor HDB flat at Tampines Street 45 was seen engulfed in thick black smoke on Wednesday, causing about 50 residents to evacuate the area. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that it was notified of the incident at Block 498J at 6:40pm.
According to Channel NewsAsia, SCDF officers had to use a power saw to “force entry” into the flat, which was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The flames, which involved the contents of a living room, were extinguished with two water jets.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported, although an eyewitness told Channel NewsAsia that his unit on the fifth floor was covered in “thick black soot” after the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
