This morning, several Toa Payoh residents awoke to the burning stench and black fumes of a fire that engulfed an HDB flat on the 15th floor of Block 45, Toa Payoh Lorong 5. Authorities evacuated about 70 residents in the building soon after.

According to The Straits Times, a loud explosion was heard by an eyewitness in the area during the time of the fire.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that it was alerted to the fire around 9:40am, and officers forced their way into the flat upon arrival, as no one was present in the unit.

The flames, which engulfed the contents of the living room, were extinguished by firefighters using two water jets, SCDF said. No injuries were reported, and residents were safely evacuated by SCDF officers and police officers.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
