Finally, selected MRT stations to be renovated by 2018 to create additional space on platforms

About time, right? Daily commuters will soon get to literally breathe a little easier when MRT stations across Singapore get some much-needed upgrades to manage the rampant overcrowding.

The Land Transport Authority today announced that they’ll be creating additional space at the platforms of 17 North-South and East-West Lines stations by 2018, which will see them covering over existing voids and reorganising station furniture.

Renovation works are expected to kick off in the middle of next year — but don’t worry, they’ll only be carried our during non-service hours. The 17 stations to be upgraded:

1. Ang Mo Kio
2. Bishan
3. Boon Lay
4. Buona Vista
5. Choa Chu Kang
6. City Hall
7. Clementi
8. Eunos
9. Jurong East
10. Khatib
11. Lakeside
12. Raffles Place
13. Pasir Ris
14. Pioneer
15. Tampines
16. Tanjong Pagar
17. Yishun

The minor inconvenience that’ll soon transpire is the early closure between Bugis and Tanah Merah MRT Stations from Nov 15 onwards to accommodate the track renewal works. Train services at the nine stations along the East-West Line will end half an hour earlier every day, except on Fridays, Saturdays and eve of Public Holidays. A small disruption, but surely it’ll pay off in more non-breakdowns in the future.
