Fidget spinners are certainly the annoying toy of the year by far (sorry, we’re old fogeys), but they are proving to be dangerous as well — at least when used incorrectly — as this unlucky teen learned.
As we’ve learnt from a novelty store that claims to have Singapore’s largest collection of fidget spinners (hooray, what an achievement), there’re nearly infinite variations of the toy. But now we might have the ultimate fidget spinner! Behold, the fidget spinner that spins so fast that it exploded in someone’s face.
According to Lianhe Wanbao, a 13-year old boy was left with injuries that required 13 stitches to his philtrum (the space between the nose and upper lip) after a fidget spinner exploded and caused a fragment to fly into his face. Reportedly, the boy and his dad learned from the internet about how to make the toy spin faster using compressed air. If they actually did some more research, they would know that this makes them blow up. Parenting 101, eh?

Over in the United States, fidget spinners are exploding — or rather bursting into flames — for a whole other reason. Battery-powered fidget spinners (that can light up and actually play music via bluetooth) have been catching fire while being charged.
Moral of the story? End this silly trend already.
