Family of toddler stuck between railings identified; netizens outraged over irresponsibility

Now that the Spider-Man of Chennai has been identified, the spotlight has turned towards the household who left the toddler all alone when the now renowned tragedy struck.

The three-year-old was found dangling mid-air at the window of the house, hanging by her head, which was stuck between the railings. She could have sustained serious injuries or even died if it wasn’t for the valiant efforts of migrant worker Shanmuganathan, who managed to climb onto the ledge and rescue the toddler. Earlier, residents had been knocking at the door of the unit to alert the people inside, but no one answered.

The New Paper, however, managed to get an interview with the family of the toddler — and it seems that the 27-year-old mother had left her daughter alone in the house to send her other daughter to school. The younger girl was sleeping when they left the house.

Grilled by the reporter, the mother explained that she did not expect the girl to wake up and get into an accident in such a small window of time. Regarding safety precautions, the dad maintained that they did not have the money to install safety grilles, but will do so once they’ve saved up enough.

A number of netizens have already voiced their disgust over the easy-going nature the parents had over the welfare of the child, pointing out that no child should be ever left unattended and alone in a house, even if it was only for a couple of minutes. Others have pointed out the fact that the parents could afford a tablet, but couldn’t afford to install safety grilles. Generally, parents are angry over the whole thing.
