A series of proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Act tabled in Parliament yesterday may make it an offence to operate any function of a mobile communication device while holding the device and driving.
If the changes are passed, not only will it be illegal to make a voice call and send text messages (i.e. communicating with another person) with a mobile phone in your hand, doing things like surfing Facebook and sending an email while holding on to other mobile gadgets like an iPad, is also punishable by law.
The proposed amendments however, do not extend to the use of devices mounted on a holder, TODAY reports. In response to queries, a Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson said the offence would only apply to a person holding gadgets like mobile telephone and tablet devices in at least one hand and operates any function on the device while driving.
