A migrant workers advocacy group based in Singapore has suspended its executive director for allegedly misappropriating the group’s funds.
Humanitarian Organisation of Migration Economics, or HOME, today announced the suspension of Deshi Gill following allegations that she misappropriated funds and will be investigating further.
“After preliminary investigations, we believe there is a basis for suspected misconduct,” the group wrote.
The group said they have notified the authorities and said its higher-ups, including the Board, will cooperate with investigations. They will also be reviewing their “governance controls” to ensure that such hiccups will not happen again.
They noted that they are unable to provide further comment as of now.
They thanked the public and donors who have supported them and assured them that their work toward helping Singapore’s migrant workers “remains unwavering.”
According to a 2021 post by HOME, Deshi was appointed executive director in July 2021 and has been working with the group since 2017 as a “key contributor.”
