Estimated $1.4 million seized as police cripple illegal soccer betting syndicate

An island-wide operation that took place between May 18 and 19 has resulted in the arrest of 18 suspects aged 30 — 65 linked to illegal soccer betting activities. 

The arrests were made in multiple locations including Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Bukit Panjang and Sentosa. 

About $1.4 million, as well as an array of computers, handphones and documents like betting and bank transaction records, have also been seized. 

Preliminary investigations reveal suspects may have received illegal soccer bets amounting to about $8 million in the past two weeks alone. 

Under the Betting Act, Chapter 21, anyone who bets with a bookmaker may be fined up to $5,000, jailed for up to six months, or both. Anyone involved in bookmaking may be fined at least $20,000 and jailed up to five years.
