An elderly schizophrenic woman was sentenced to 21 months of supervised probation today after being convicted for dealing copious amounts of physical abuse upon a domestic helper.
It was revealed that Lum Wai Lui’s schizophrenia and depressive symptoms contributed to her violent misdeeds, which included pouring bleach onto the victim’s head as well as slapping and slamming her head against a wall.
Court documents revealed that Lum had delusions about Muegue having affairs with her sons-in-law, TODAY reports.
For 10 months, Jonna Memeje Muegue suffered under the clutches of the 75-year-old, and eventually escaped from Maplewoods condominium in October 2012. She escaped by climbing out a window.
Lum has since been ordered to continue taking her medication and see a psychiatrist. The District Judge also stated that the probation order will be revoked should Lum remain uncooperative. A bond of $15,000 was also paid by her daughter to ensure her compliance with the probation order.
$24,000 for Muegue’s hospital and nursing home bills was also paid for by Lum’s family. A civil suit against Lum has also been launched to claim compensation for Muegue’s grievous injuries and loss of income.
