Amani WeddingnCatering posted yesterday a photo by Facebook user Muhammed Abdul Latiff of the Halal East Coast BBQ Seafood Stall.
Believed to be located at the East Coast Lagoon Food Village, the stall does not have official halal certification from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), but denied they were doing anything wrong by using the word “halal” on their signage.
The post has since amassed about 462 shares and over 100 comments, all of split opinion.

I was at the newly reopened East Coast Lagoon Food Village for dinner with my family today. We went straight to our favourite stall that sells the famous Kuay Teow Kerang. To our disappointment they were no more there.
Its now “Halal East Coast BBQ Seafood” (stall 01-60).
I wanted to order some food, but realised that all from the stall were non-muslims. I asked if they have got MUIS Halal Cert for them to use the word halal on their signage. They replied no.
I told them that if they do not have the Halal Cert, they cannot be putting “Halal” on their signage.
Their reply (bluntly): “Why cannot” !!!!
What action will MUIS take against those who abuse the word “Halal” – in relation to:
1) those who use the word “Halal” on their signage without MUIS certification.
2) those with MUIS Halal Cert, but are in transgress of their obligation (eg: no Muslim staff around, having non-halal food within same premises, etc..)
3) those using MUIS Halal cert as a marketing tool to attract Muslim consumer but conveniently not renewing the cert when Muslims are used to them being Halal.”
