National Development (MND) Minister Khaw Boon Wan wrote in a blog post on Monday that MDN is considering expanding Singapore’s use of underground space.

He cited cities like Canada, Japan and Montreal as having succeeded in creating and maintaining extensive underground facilities such as cinemas, hotels, human traffic passages, offices, shopping malls, train stations and even universities, and expressed his hopes for Singapore to do the same.

As it is, the city already makes good use of underground space with its MRT stations, shopping malls, linkways and most recently, the JTC Jurong Rock Caverns, which when finished will be Southeast Asia’s first underground oil and petrochemical storage facility. The Marina Coastal Expressway due to complete this year will also be mostly underground.

Minister Khaw Boon Wan also revealed that the MND are in the process of updating their underground master plan and will be revealing it soon via an exhibition.
