A motorist fled the scene after striking and killing an elderly dog in Bishan last Friday, according to a Facebook post by its owner.
Tee Wei Chuan wrote that his 15-year-old mixed breed dog, Lucky, was fatally hit outside 31 Sing Ming Drive just before 8 pm. Tee also included CCTV footage of the accident in his post.
“As you can see from the footage, Lucky actually saw a car coming and upon raising his head, the car (Toyota Estima) knocked him down instantaneously,” he said on Facebook.
The video shows the car hitting the small dog, then driving off without stopping.
“The driver did slow down and even drove back to see ‘what he had hit,’” wrote Tee. “He/she did not get out of the car at all.”
Under Singapore law, hitting an animal while driving and not rendering assistance to it is an offense under the Road Traffic Act. Motorists are required to stop and help when they hit animals such as dogs, horses, mules, sheep, pigs, goats, and cattle (monkeys, cats, birds, and wild boars are left out of the law, for some reason).
Those who fail to do so can be fined up to S$3,000 or jailed for up to a year.
“To Lucky, I was his everything. And to me, he was too,” he wrote in the Facebook post. “Lucky might go anytime due to his old age, but he should not have died in this manner.”
Tee informed Coconuts Singapore that the loss of his faithful pet of 15 years has been traumatic for both him and his mother, who also bonded with the animal.
He says he created the Facebook post to encourage any witnesses to the incident to come forward in order to identify the vehicle.
“I am very upset,” Tee told Coconuts Singapore. “I want the driver to apologize”.
