The concept is intriguing—EyeFly3D is a screen protector that promises to turn video content 3D without compromising a smartphone’s brightness, resolution or touchscreen sensitivity (see promo video below).
The product of a collaboration between the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research, and Temasek Polytechnic, the glasses-free 3D accessory for smartphones clinched the top spot in the Technology Innovation category at the Institution of Engineers Singapore’s (IES) Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards.
But if online reviews—the EyeFly3D is available for sale at USD34.95 (SGD44) via the official website—are anything to go buy, consumers are not liking it.
Said ‘Amos Moses’ on MetricsCat: “Yeah the 3D works, but it’s not good. The film annoyed me so much just using the phone normally that I removed it after a couple of hours… Save your money (instead)!”
A reviewer on MacRumors.com has also described the images conjured by EyeFly3D as being “distorted” and reported the brightness and resolution are distinctly affected, contrary to the company’s sales pitch.
