Downtown Line 1 rides free till Jan. 1

The newly-opened Downtown Line 1 (DTL1) rail network will be free for all commuters till Jan. 1, 2014.

The Public Transport Council (PTC) has also announced that fares for the line will be the same as that of the North-East Line (NEL) and the Circle Line (CCL) after the specified date.

DTL1, which begins operations on Dec. 22, consists of six new stations namely Bugis, Promenade, Bayfront, Downtown, Telok Ayer and Chinatown.

With its connection to four interchanges, DTL1 will shorten travelling times of commuters by up to 17 minutes, depending on where they board and alight.

Chairman of PTC Gerard Ee said that the fares have been structured to integrate with the current distance-based scheme which is used on the existing public transport system.

He also added that commuters will benefit from even more travel options when the DTL is fully completed.
