Singapore’s image as a squeaky-clean, corruption-free city isn’t all that sparkly — there’s bound to be a bit of dirt hidden somewhere. In court today, a police officer has just been charged for two counts of bribery amounting up to $35,000.
TODAY reports that 28-year-old Staff Sergeant Woo Poh Liang received $25,000 from a man called Beltran Angelo Salvador in September last year as incentive to help him avoid prosecution. Apparently, Salvador was due to face legal proceedings for uttering words or gestures intended to insult a woman’s modesty.
On the same day on Sept 17, got another $10,000 from Salvador — but this time money exchanged hands inside an interview room at the Clementi Police Division.
Bribery wasn’t all that this dirty cop dealt with. Woo was also charged for acting as a runner for an illegal bookmaker, as well as buying lottery tickets from another.
A bail of $30,000 was placed on him, and will be back in court on Oct 22. He was suspended from the Singapore Police force on Jan 29.
