Despite no show by Amos Yee, appeal against his conviction goes ahead in High Court

The Amos Yee saga is not over just yet — an appeal against his conviction and four-week jail sentence has just been heard in court today.

The infamous young dissenter walked free back in July after months of media attention, controversies, debates and over 50 days spent in remand. He received a backdated sentence of four weeks in prison for two charges wounding religious feelings in an expletive-laden video comparing Lee Kuan Yew to Jesus, and circulating an obscene cartoon of the former prime minister, who died in March.

Yee was expected to attend the High Court this morning for his appeal to be heard, but according to Channel NewsAsia, he didn’t even turn up.

Nonetheless, the court decided to have the hearing without Yee, and the appeal was made by his lawyer Alfred Dodwell.
