Singapore Democratic Alliance may not have gotten much love from voters in last week’s election, but the party says its retro campaign posters are flying off the shelves.

Now on sale to offset campaign costs, the posters are selling like hot cakes, coalition chief Desmond Lim said today of sales online, where they can be purchased at any price.

“The response on the online orders was amazing and encouraging, our posters are selling like hot cake,” Lim said.

He also said that the party is turning down requests from those asking to commercialize the designs.

“There are [enquiries] wanting to buy the copyrights of our posters and develop into series of products. We are sorry, it involves public interest and we won’t sell it to any commercial company or individual for commercial purposes,” Lim said.

The party lost its three-cornered fight in the Pasir Ris-Punggol constituency against the People’s Action and Peoples Voice parties, scoring only 23.67% of votes.

Their retro posters, which resemble graphics from 1960s-era politics, were the talk of town earlier this month and received praise for their illustrations depicting social issues instead of the usual candidates’ faces and names.

The posters depicted hot-button issues such as the elderly working past their retirement years, and working class struggling with high living costs, such as housing and medical care.

“A lot of requests have been received for our campaign posters and the public found then to be highly creative and they stood out from other parties and wanted to buy them. We have decided to merchandise and sell them for any amount offered to offset the high costs incurred in these elections on a ‘Pay as you wish, Take as you Like!’” the party said Sunday.
