What was initially thought to be claps of thunder turned out to be something else just as alarming — an HDB block’s decorative cladding fell from the top floor and smashed right onto the ground floor.

Fortunately, nobody was around to be injured by the fallen debris. The incident at Block 270 Pasir Ris Street 21 was first brought up on Facebook by Ye Ruoshi yesterday, who posted about the collapsed fixtures in his residential estate. The crash was loud enough to startle her child in the morning.

Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Member of Parliament (MP) Zainal Sapari wrote about the incident on his Facebook page, assuring that the incident site has since been cordoned off, with investigations being carried out by the HDB technical department.

Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council and HDB confirmed to Channel NewsAsia that a “piece of decorative cladding had dislodged from the facade” of the block. Of course, they had to assure that the building remains structurally safe — the fallen panel was simply decorative and “non-structural”.

Repairs will be conducted, and additional precautionary safety measures will be carried out in neighboring blocks with the same facade features.

This would be yet another major incident affecting HDB blocks along Pasir Ris Street 21. Three years ago, a massive 10-story tree uprooted and came crashing down onto Block 243 along Pasir Ris Street 21, smashing windows in the process.
