Pick ‘n’ Mix candy stations are a sugary sanctuary where nostalgia, cavities, and now, inflation meet.

TikTok user @heyits.ling recently shared her excitement about visiting a Bilimbi candy store to pick up some treats with her friend.

Paperbags are handed out to customers of the store to pick and mix their candy. Despite the size of the bag, Ling and her friend only got a handful of candy sticks which she said called a “childhood sweet”.

Her friend was frugal with her scoops but was encouraged to “take more” by Ling. In the end, the amount of candy both of them got barely covered the bottom of the bag.

Still, when checking out at the cashier, the total came up to slightly more than S$25 (US$18.50). Wew.

In her caption, Ling said, “Nowadays buying sweets is like daylight robbery.” Throughout the video, there was no mention of how the candy was priced.

In a follow-up video, Ling said that before paying up, she had joked with her friend saying that it would be funny if the total came up to more than S$25. Well…

Her commenters also shared their own experiences at the store – some spent even more than her.

From a quick search, a review on influencer platform Lemon8 states that some candies at Bilimbi are priced at S$10 per 100g, while other go for S$5 for 100g.

The weird thing is, the review is hardly one as the person who wrote it did not even buy or try any of the candy as “girlie here is trying to diet”.

So there you go — always get your food reviews from reputable platforms and don’t get scammed at the candy shop.
