Well la-di-da, some folks are such colossal fans of the General Election that they went ahead and created plush dolls representing each of the political parties, adding an adorable yet bizarre facet to the whole affair.
And when we mean bizarre, we really mean wacky. Disregarding any form of comic book copyright issues, they’ve taken the prerogative to take existing superhero characters and moulded them into absurd personalities symbolising the various political parties contesting in the upcoming elections. They’re called the Super Guardians of Singapore.
Take a gander at this poorly disguised Wolverine, AKA The AMK Clawer, the plush mascot for The Reform Party — or rather the Y-Men. Or maybe you’re a fan of the web-slinging The Original Spidey. Or you want this gimp-like Ultraman Iron Man, who represents Singapore People’s Party’s Chiam See Tong, the longest-serving opposition Member of Parliament.

And of course, Workers’ Party is represented by Thor, with his trusty (under-financed) Mjolnir striking against the vibranium shield of Captain Singapore (who’s actually the ruling People’s Action Party).

Why in Jack Kirby’s name are they doing this?
“We hopes (sic) to promote greater awareness of politics in Singapore by connecting to the young and children so as to educate and interest them in politics through fictional characters that resonates the values and visions of the different political parties in Singapore,” they wrote on their crowdfunding page on Indiegogo. Which so far has raised $0 as of writing, since it was set up five days ago.
They aim to collect $15,000 in funding in order to produce 5,000 of their toys, which they say will be distributed during election rallies.
“Your contribution will help elevate Singapore status as the only 1st world country with a 3rd world Parliament which is 90% dominated by a single ruling party with little or no alternative voice”. A noble intention surely, but lacks any sort of interest from members of the public. Whatever the end result of their campaign, you gotta give them props for having the motivation to carry out such thankless pursuits. They’re pretty in touch with what’s happening in the General Election drama on their blog, so they’ve got that going for them at least.
