A Comfort Delgo taxi driver has been sentenced to three weeks’ imprisonment for attacking a fellow cab driver, and all due to quarrelling about the cost of firecrackers.
According to Channel NewsAsia, 58-year-old part-time cabbie Tan Soo Ann had been drinking with friends at a coffee shop at Admiralty when he found out that his sublime opinions on the selling price of firecrackers differed from the assured beliefs of Marc Chen, a Transcab taxi driver.
The gentlemen ended their intellectual exchange of views when Chen stood up and flipped the table they were sitting at, before literally throwing down the gauntlet by smashing a beer bottle onto the ground. They dispersed, but Tan suffered knee injuries during the scuffle.
Angered by Chen’s vulgar display of power, Tan spotted Chen the next day at a multi-storey carpark at Woodlands and used a metallic object he found to attack Chen from behind, lacerating his arm twice. Tan ran away and disposed the object in the buses nearby.
District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim remarked that Tan could have been jailed for up to two years, but she took into account that the assault was not a premeditated course of action.
