COVID-19 clocked in its highest daily score in 17 months this past weekend with more than 1,000 daily cases, despite a never-ending struggle to contain the virus.
Just two months ago, Singapore recorded close to 200 daily infections. Now, the count is five times that with yesterday hitting 1,012 infections – three more than Saturday – from close to 20 active clusters at nursing homes, food centers and bus interchanges. A third of those recently taking ill are seniors over 60, who account for most of those hospitalized and in critical condition.
Four outbreaks have been traced to the Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market and Food Centre, Woodlands Care and Windsor Convalescent nursing homes, and Yishun preschool My Little Campus increased large active clusters to 16, the Ministry of Health said Sunday.
It added that there were 873 warded patients, with 21 in intensive care. Five deaths, all seniors, were also recorded this month.
It’s the worst things have been since April 2020, the last time daily cases exceeded 1,000.
An outbreak hitting transit employees has stricken more than 400 bus workers at interchange stations in Boon Lay, Punggol, and Tampines.
Nearly 300 people have taken ill in the Chinatown Complex marketplace.
As of Saturday, 82% of Singapore has been fully vaccinated. Though cases are rising, the authorities have not tightened restrictions allowing fully vaccinated people to gather and dine in groups of up to five.
The nation has reported 77,804 cases and 60 deaths since the outbreak began.
