Singapore saw a massive surge in infections today while Hong Kong reported zero cases for the first time since early March and Malaysia had no new deaths to announce.
The majority of Singapore’s 1,426 new cases today were linked to migrant worker dormitories, where COVID-19 appears to be spreading out of control. After several days of reporting single-digit increases and with no new cases to report today, Hong Kong still thinks it is too early to declare victory.
In Malaysia, the disease continues to spread despite no daily new deaths. A new cluster has emerged among students who recently returned from Indonesia, according to Health Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah. The 43 students had visited an Islamic boarding school in Temboro, an area Indonesia has declared a red zone and put under quarantine, he added.
Meanwhile, hotels on Bali could reopen again in May to welcome Chinese tourists, as authorities in the latter relax outbound travel restrictions.
