Couple who tortured 2-year-old boy to death will serve at least 10 years in jail each

Last month, the country reacted in pure horror after hearing about the sickening torture two-year-old Mohamed Daniel Mohamed Nasser had to endure for over a month at the hands of his own mother and her boyfriend. The boy eventually died from his injuries, his last memories surrounding the fact that he was unloved.

Justice has been served at last; Daniel’s torturers have been sent to the slammer, where they’ll each rot for at least a decade. The boy’s mother, 41-year-old Zaidah, was sentenced to 11 years in jail, while her boyfriend, 46-year-old Zaini Jamari, was sentenced to 10 years in jail and 12 strokes of the cane, Channel NewsAsia reports.

The couple fielded numerous charges for child abuse, and pleaded guilty to one count each for causing grievous hurt resulting in death.

The heartbreaking details of the physical, mental and emotional abuse they executed upon the toddler in their one-room Telok Blangah flat was revealed in court last month. For five weeks before Daniel’s death, he was slapped, kicked, pinched, stomped, forced to stand for long hours and even force-fed spoonfuls of dried chilli. The day before his death, the two-year-old was kicked in the stomach and fell to the floor, hitting his head. He died the next morning from bleeding in the brain.

It took the prosecutor several minutes to read out a list of over 40 external injuries found on the body during an autopsy.
