Self-empowered women of Singapore who love reading risqué inconsequential articles, say goodbye to purchasing your monthly editions of Cosmopolitan — it’s closing down after four years in running, The Straits Times reports.
According to a spokesperson for publishers SPHM, Cosmopolitan Singapore will cease to be due to unsustainable business models, especially in the crowded lifestyle publication scene.
The closure will disappoint many who fought for the magazine to be on shelves here — the title had previously been prohibited in Singapore since 1982 due to “extreme liberal values”, including (absurd) sex tips, self-empowerment and other risqué content. The international version was later available only in 2004, and the local version was eventually launched in 2011 — seen as a milestone in Singapore’s loosening censorship rules.
Of course, women here can always jump ship to the numerous other female-centric magazines including Her World, Cleo, Simply Her, Female, Singapore Women’s Weekly and other virtually indistinguishable titles.
