Hey everyone, happy World Rabies Day! As a day dedicated to eliminate the viral disease — which still remains a major health problem in many countries today — the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) has found it fit to slam down a suspension on all commercial imports of dogs and cats from Malaysia.
The rabies risk level for Malaysia was raised from Category C to Category D last week when positive cases of rabies were detected in dogs found in Perlis, Kedah and Penang. Effectively, the re-classification has categorised Malaysia as a country with an undetermined risk of rabies.
Pet owners who do wish to bring along their individual dogs and cats from Malaysia will have to adhere to strict veterinary conditions and vaccination requirements, with even longer quarantine periods.
No human deaths have been reported so far, so there’s no need to arm yourselves for the rabies-o-pocalypse yet.
