In another step towards a cashless future, transactions via EZ-Link and Concession Cards will be made available at all NETS-enabled hawker centers from April onwards.
It’ll work just the same with public transport gantries — but now you can tap your cards to pay for your daily dose of chicken rice and teh peng.
Currently, there are over 1,000 stalls across more than 30 hawker centers that accept NETS payments through dedicated terminals, and they’ll soon start accepting the same cards most commuters already use every day.
In a first-ever partnership between NETS and EZ-Link, e-payments have been made more accessible at hawker centers in their bid to build a cashless ecosystem that’ll contribute towards advancing the country’s ongoing Smart Nation vision. The new initiative should benefit senior citizens and students — a majority of whom don’t have bank accounts, it seems. Of course, there’s also the option of paying for food and drinks with mobile phones through QR codes.
“This partnership is a significant milestone in our efforts to build a cashless ecosystem at hawker centers because we are now able to offer all Singaporeans, young and old, a ‘single interface’ payments experience at hawker centers,” said NETZ CEO Jeffrey Goh.
